About the event
John Whicher is a retired professor of pathology who pursued a career in medical science and research. He has had an interest in geology since collecting fossils around Sherborne as a child. In his retirement he is studying the geology and palaeontology of the Inferior Oolite of Dorset about which he has published a number of papers.
The area around Sherborne has been a focus of palaeontological and geological research since the work of Buckman father and son in the mid to late 19th century. Interest lies in the Middle Jurassic Inferior Oolite formation which preserved exceptional invertebrate faunas. Despite extensive work over the years new discoveries continue. This talk will explore the geological background, the inferior Oolite faunas and the fascinating and ubiquitous Sherborne Building Stone.
