About the event
The Rev. Arthur Miles Moss built the first Anglican Church in the Amazon in 1912, serving the entire Amazon basin! It was the largest parish in the world. But there was much more to Moss than his religious beliefs. He was a talented naturalist, gifted artist, and composer. In particular, his passion for butterflies and moths was extraordinary. During his forty years in the Amazon Moss travelled tens of thousands of miles by boat and on foot – meeting his parishioners but also collecting in areas where no scientist had ever set foot. On some of his journeys he endured incredible hardship and some scarcely believable adventures. During his time in the Amazon he amassed a collection of 25 000 specimens which now resides in London’s Natural History Museum.
